Dr. Carolyn Woo, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services frequently turns to this quote from Father Theodore Hesburgh, CSC: “Mediocrity is not the way we serve the Blessed Mother,” and affirms it, asserting:
I completely agree. Just because we are good-hearted doesn’t mean that we should be second class.
It can be hard to admit that, when it comes to management, administration, preaching, teaching, or leadership, some things we do are mediocre (or worse!). But, unless we give ourselves an honest assessment, moving beyond “okay,” we’ll never know the depths and heights God is calling us to as servants of Jesus Christ in his Church. This alone should be a good enough reason to pursue excellence, not mediocrity.
