Jordan of Saxony and Leadership Transition

Today is the feast of Jordan of Saxony, O.P.

Jordan had the honor, responsibility, distinction, and challenge of being the second leader of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans), taking over for Dominic, the order’s founder.

Leadership transitions are always tough. They require intentionality from all involved. As Ann Garrido writes in Redeeming Administration, “old loyalties are difficult to shift, new confidences tough to build” (33). Yet new leaders and successors will continue to face challenging questions, decisions “between generativity and stagnation” (39).

We ask this day that through the intercessions of Jordan we might remain enthusiastic and committed to the missions we inherit, in a way that cultivates generativity, rather than stagnation.
