In Chapter 5 of A Pastor’s Toolbox: Management Skills for Parish Leadership, David Boettner lays out 6 key components of a comprehensive, quality human resources program.
- Recruitment and selection
- Orientation and support
- Evaluation and feedback (this includes “thoughtful and thorough job descriptions”)
- Compensation* (“We’re accustomed to think that because people work for the church, they should be underpaid. If we look at our Protestant brothers and sisters, that is not true. They actually pay very well–at or above market value.)
- Transition and termination
- Grievance procedures
These should be adapted for volunteers who serve in parishes, but in that situation we might call it helping people hear/respond to a call, formation, appreciation, and transparency/accountability.
*Note: According to Boettner the National Association of Church Personnel Administrators website (members only portion) contains salary and wage scales for specific jobs by region of the county.
